Dr. Stephen C Ume, MD/MS

Dr. Stephen C Ume, MD/MS is a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist and Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is also a Diplomate of the International Society of Refractive Surgery of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Ume is a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist with fellowship training in medical and surgical management of glaucoma. He has dedicated numerous years of medical school, residency, fellowship and post-fellowship training to research and education in eye disease.

Dr. Ume graduated in the College Honors Program at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. He attended University of Michigan College of Pharmacy in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Dean’s Scholarship before transferring to Rosalind Franklin University School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.

At Rosalind Franklin University School of Medicine, Dr. Ume graduated with a master’s degree in applied physiology and additional joint Doctor of Medicine and master’s degree in pathology. He graduated Medical School an Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Scholar. Alpha Omega Alpha Society is the only academic Honors Medical Society in United States medical schools and is a lifelong honor bestowed on top graduating medical students who demonstrate the characteristics of excellent Physicians.

​​Dr. Ume continued his ophthalmology training at Henry Ford Hospitals in Michigan and clinical glaucoma fellowship training at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami College of Medicine. Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is consistently rated the #1 Ophthalmology training program in the United States

Dr Ume and Gwinnett Ophthalmology are deeply committed to making a positive difference in enhancing eye care both in the United States and abroad. He serves in the UCLA Alumni mentorship program and serves as a Preceptor with Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Ume has participated in numerous medical volunteer missions to combat preventable eye diseases abroad. He established and currently oversees 2 eye care centers dedicated to training and mentoring young Eye Care Professionals in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr. Ume is a devout Christian. In his free time, he loves to spend time with his family, attend church activities and travel. He lives with his family in Buford, Georgia.
