At Gwinnett Ophthalmology, we are deeply vested in the community and are committed to bridging economic, racial and social disparities through top quality eye care while also developing various public health interventions to improve ophthalmic care in the community.

Dr. Stephen C Ume, MD/MS is an eye Physician and Surgeon and the Medical Director of Gwinnett Ophthalmology. Dr. Ume has dedicated numerous years of medical school, residency, fellowship and post-fellowship training to research and education in eye disease.
Dr. Ume graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. He attended University of Michigan College of Pharmacy in Ann Arbor, Michigan before transferring to Rosalind Franklin University School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.
At Rosalind Franklin University School of Medicine, Dr. Ume graduated with a master’s degree in Applied Physiology and a joint Doctor of Medicine and master’s degree in Pathology. Dr Ume graduated Medical School as an Alpha Omega Alpha Scholar; an honor bestowed on top graduating students who demonstrate the characteristics of excellent Physicians.
Dr. Ume continued his Ophthalmology training at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and clinical glaucoma fellowship training at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami College of Medicine.
Throughout the course of his education, training and practice, Dr. Ume has authored peer reviewed articles and participated in many academic and medical volunteer missions to combat preventable eye diseases in the United States and abroad. He currently serves as an eye consultant and surgeon to eye establishments in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Ume is a devout Christian. In his free time, he loves to spend time with his family, attend church activities and travel. He lives with his family in Suwanee, Georgia.
